We started swimming lessons down at Wai Splash on Monday. We have been sorted into 3 groups with 3 tutors and we are doing really well with each tutor. They are helping us all to learn new skills in the water. We are becoming much more confident and we can hardly wait for the triathalon on December the 6th, so we can show our parents how great we are!

Science Investigation Discovery Day
On Friday 8th of November we had another Science Discovery Day. In Room 1 we were investigating circuits and predicting what would make the bulb light up. In Room 2 we were predicting what a magnet would pick up. In Room 3 we were predicting which objects would float and which would sink. In Room 14, we were looking at kitchen science as we watched a balloon expand on a bottle.
The Indonesian Dancers
On Wednesday 6th of November, two Indonesian dancers came to school to show us their special dances. They also taught us one of their songs and some of us got to put on a special Indonesian costume for a traditional dance. That was lots of fun. We also got to ask them questions and found out that they travel all over the world demonstrating their dances at lots of schools.

The lady used a big fan as part of her first dance.
They wore lovely Indonesian costumes .
Here is the song we sang with them.
Here are some of the children in special skirts doing a traditional skirt dance.

Grasshopper Tennis with Cameron
On Monday, Cameron came from Palmerston North to teach us all about Grasshopper Tennis and all the skills we will be needing to play tennis. We learnt to hold the racquet correctly, how to balance a tennis ball on the racquet and how to bounce the ball on the racquet. We had fun and we will be having more lessons next week.

Jamie McDell visits our School
Last Monday, Jamie McDell visited our school. She is an amazing singer and sings lovely songs about things that are really important to her. She writes them all herself. We asked her lots of questions and a very important one was...
"Who is your hero?"
We were so happy to hear that Jamie's hero is her Dad. We are doing a song about Dad's in our school " Hero Quest" production, as we think our Mum's and Dad's are our heroes in Team 1.

We had our photo taken with Jamie. She was so nice to us and answered all of our questions. We are so happy she flew down from Auckland to spend the day with us.

Library Time with Room 15
We have the Room 15 students come to the library with us on a Friday afternoon. We all buddy up and they read stories to us. We really enjoy the Room 15 students helping us. They are our friends. It is really nice for us to have friends in the senior school to care for us. We know a lot of their names now so we can say hello.

Maths Day 5-8-13
Yesterday we had a great day in the hall. Graeme had made a whole lot of interesting maths activities for us to do some problem solving and discovering. We were lucky because Fenella was our Room 17 helper and she read the instructions to us and supported us when we were working on a problem.
Peyton and Jeianah worked hard on making a dinosaur and a dog.
Connor and Isaiah were really clever and made a crab and a cat.
We had lots of challenges at our Maths Day. It was so interesting we kept going and didn't want to stop when the bell went.
Thank you Graeme for bringing those great activities to our school for us to discover.

Our Amazing Visit to Owlcatraz in Shannon on July 21st 2013
On June the 21st we went to Owlcatraz in Shannon. We travelled down on the bus and the parents followed us in their cars. We went to Owlcatraz because we are studying "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" and Owlcatraz is a good example of this. It used to be the Shannon dump - or landfill. Janette and her husband have done an amazing job transforming the "dump" into a really lovely natural bush and sanctuary for birds and animals. We learnt heaps about owls while we were there and we met lots of interesting animals, like donkeys, a Kune Kune pig who ate bread held in his carers mouth, an ostrich, ducklings, pukekos, alpaca's, goats and deer. We hunted for hidden statues and we found "hogs on logs", "frogs on logs", "hedgehogs on logs", bears, bunnies, sheep and many more hiding in the bush. We went to see Lake Owlsmere and the eels.We saw a waterwheel which had a teapot feeding water onto it. Even though it was a freezing day, we had a really interesting time. Thank you to Janette and everyone at Owlcatraz and the parents who came with us. We hope you had fun too!
Here is Joey. He eats chocolate chip biscuits. He can ring a bell and say thank you!
Here is Janette talking to us before we go into the dark owl enclosure. We had to be quiet while we watched the owls. They recycle the mouse bone and fur after eating the mice.
Here are the donkeys . We loved patting them. They were very friendly.

We can type our stories on the i-pads.
This week we were really clever on the i-pads. We drew our picture plan and then we typed our stories. We learnt to make the text bigger, how to delete, do spaces, make upper case letters and finish with a fullstop. Do you like our stories? We are really enjoying using the i-pads each Tuesday.

I-Pad time in Room 1 28-5-13
We have been using the i-pads every Tuesday to write our stories. We think of an idea and then we draw a picture plan. Mrs E. takes a photo of our pictures, then we clear the screen and write our stories. We love using the i-pads because it is easy to correct anything by using the back arrow. We can have a go at words, listen to all the sounds they make and then write the words as best we can. When we have finished our story, Mrs E takes a photo of them and puts them together with our pictures. We display them on the classroom wall. Please come and read them if you would like to. We are very proud of our work.
